Scolds

As a matter of personal taste I don’t get scolding and shaming speech. I’ve never found it to be a particularly useful tactic for detouring someone else’s thought process, and I know damn well that it it just brings out my inner “fuck you I’ll do what I want” teenager.

Thing is, I see a lot of my fellow progressives deploying it all the damn time.

I understand it’s use as a rallying call: a way to target a political enemy, particularly an institutional one that may be vulnerable to the tactic thanks to the doubt and shame of its constituents. Yet when used against individuals I almost always see people disengage and fortify their positions.

Putting your enemy on his or her heels might win you a battle, but it only seems to prolong a war.
