Sit, Eat and Chew 五味杂陈 takes small groups of 20 people across different sites in Chinatown on a site-specific pop-up dance tour. Audience members may find themselves in a hair salon, private apartment, park, restaurant, or the Museum of Chinese in America (MOCA) as they learn about the untold stories of Chinatown from real-life residents. Artist Mei-Yin Ng of MEI-BE WHATever uses groups of amateur dancers (local seniors) to explore the themes of the Chinese proverb “Wǔ Wèi Zá Chén 五味杂陈”; the proverb uses the five tastes of cooking (sour, sweet, bitter, spicy and salty) to denote life’s complicated and often rocky ups and downs.
