How do you make dances for bathtubs, swimming pools, cafe tables, and other non-traditional dance spaces? Choreographer Jonathan Matthews shares his tools for creating site-specific dances with exercises geared toward using props as dance partners, seeing oneself as part of a larger landscape, and using any terrain as a stage. Open to actors and dancers of all levels of experience.
Jonathan Matthews has served as performer and choreographer with This is Not a Theatre Company for Versailles 2015–17, Pool Play 2.0, and Café Play. He has collaborated with Artistic Director Erin Mee on projects for Figment, Chef David Bouley, and the International Theatre Festival of Kerala. A graduate of NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, he holds a BFA in Dance and a minor in music, as well as a 300-hour yoga teaching certification through the Perri Institute for Mind and Body. He performs with a variety of dance ensembles from Irish to contemporary ballet, and co-directs BREAKTIME., a performance duo co-founded with Holly Sass.
