Site-Specific Audio Play for the New York City Subway!
In This is Not a Theatre Company’s Subway Plays, audiences ride the L, N, and 7 trains while listening to “Subway Plays,” a trilogy of site-specific audio plays that are downloaded to your smart phone via a $2.99 app from Apple or Android. Audiences mix the recorded dialogue with the sights, smells and sounds of the actual subway, and consider their role in the live performance event that is the Big Apple.
Subway Plays are self-scheduled: audiences can ride the L, N, or 7 lines late at night, early in the morning, or any time in between — they choose the day and time, which then affects the experience they have. Audiences can start in Manhattan and go to Brooklyn and Queens for Act 1, or start in Brooklyn or Queens — in which case Act 1 ends rather than begins in Manhattan. Subway Plays are in English with Spanish, Arabic, Hindi, Mandarin, Russian, Greek, Hungarian, and French.
This Is Not A Theatre Company’s Ferry Play, an audio play for the Staten Island Ferry, was heralded as “spirited, meditative…mesmerizing” by The New York Times. Podplays are an emerging genre of theatre that take advantage of mobile technology to create site-specific audio-based theatrical experiences. Because of its price ($1.99 for Ferry Play, and $2.99 for the trilogy of Sunway Plays) TCG Circle says, “Ferry Play has reached the kind of diverse audiences that other theaters dream about.” American Theatre Magazine adds, “…Another perk of a podplay is that the show goes on in perpetuity.”
