In January 2018, the Peale received a mysterious package which included detailed plans on how to build a 200-year time machine. The decision was made to follow the plans and build the time machine in secret. And after nine-months of construction, the time machine has now completed numerous successful tests, and we are thrilled to now offer Time Travel Tours to the general public, as well as researchers, educators and historians.

The Escapement Time Travel Agency has been set up inside the Peale, to house the time machine, manage Time Travel Tours, as well as distill the fuel necessary for travel to the past. After activating the time machine, time travelers are invited to step back in time to visit Rembrandt Peale’s study in 1818. Enjoy a guided tour of this hands-on exhibit led by curator, historian and storyteller David London, who will illuminate the many wonders that await you inside.

Content Advisories: The experience is on the first floor of the Peale, with an accessible ramped entrance through our garden. While most participants stand the entire experience, which certainly allows for a more exploratory time, seating is available in all rooms that the Tours take place in. We do move between 3 different areas, all in close proximity on the first floor of the Peale.
