The second floor of the McNichols Building will be the place to immerse yourself in our rapidly changing media landscape. The Annex will present innovative virtual-reality installations throughout the festival! Program includes these ticked experiences:
Fire Escape: This sleek Rear Window-inspired thriller casts you in the role of a voyeur with a front-row seat on a Brooklyn fire escape to the dramas unfolding in the apartment across the street — though you won’t be a mere witness for long. Read our review.
Hamlet-Mobile: Hamlet-Mobile is an immersive, site-specific adaptation of Shakespeare’s Hamlet staged in a cargo van, which parks in a predetermined location on a given day to perform different excerpts of the play for audiences of one to two people. Read our Q&A with Director Lauren Ludwig.
Terminal 3: Terminal 3 is a single experience, interactive documentary that explores contemporary Muslim identities in the U.S. through the lens of an airport interrogation. Put on the Microsoft HoloLens and step into the shoes of a border-control agent to determine the fate of the hologram before you, using your own voice. Read our review.
Program includes these free experiences:
Battlescar: Set in New York City in 1978, Lupe, a Puerto Rican American 16 year old, meets Debbie on the cell of a juvenile detention center. Debbie will introduce Lupe to the punk rock scene of the Lower East Side and the secret worlds of Alphabet City.
Chorus: Transform yourself and five friends into fantastical female warriors and go on an epic journey to a faraway, Tron-like world. There, you will battle treacherous monsters who aim to annihilate your species to the visceral sounds of electronic duo Justice.
Dinner Party: This experience is based on the true story of the Hills, an interracial couple who reported the first nationally known UFO abduction, sought hypnosis to recall the details, and then played the recordings of their memories at a dinner party, where viewers bear witness to their shifting memories.
Spheres: Chorus of the Cosmos: Planet Earth sings. In this interactive VR experience, we discover the Universe through sound. Our solar system becomes an instrument and we listen to its music.
Spheres: Songs of Spacetime: Dive into the heart of a black hole to uncover the breakthrough discovery of gravitational waves. Fall into the darkness, and you will find the light.
Spheres: Pale Blue Dot: The Big Bang was silent. Then came sound. A journey from the edge of the cosmos to uncover the strangest song of all.
Sanctuaries of Silence: Silence just might be on the verge of extinction and acoustic ecologist Gordon Hempton believes that even the most remote corners of the globe are impacted by noise pollution. In Sanctuaries of Silence, join Hempton on an immersive listening journey into Olympic National Park, one of the quietest places in North America.
Vestige: Take a creative nonfiction journey through the mind of Lisa as she remembers her lost love Erik. Fragments of memories of their life together become entangled with a haunting vision that culminates in the shocking moment of Erik’s death. Read our review.
The Willows: You are cordially invited to the Willows’ family dinner — but the friendly gesture is not what it seems in this virtual adaptation of the critically acclaimed immersive theater production. Read our review.
Wolves in the Walls (Chapter 1): Eight-year-old Lucy suspects that wolves live in the walls of her family’s home. She has no one to believe her … but you. Forging a groundbreaking blend of film, theatre, audience agency, and sleight of hand, this exquisitely crafted animated experience casts you as an active performer in a narrative where you interact, have a relationship with, and go on a quest with the central character in ways that leave your mark on the experience.
