Last Christmas, I gave you some immersive…
Hey folks! Just a couple of bibs and bobs in the news this week, mostly in the XR world, so we’ll be taking it easy between Christmas and New Year’s, with maybe a few more reviews here but not the usual barrage of news.
In the meantime, be sure to read our epic 2018 Year In Immersive Wrap-Up and listen to the last episode of the NoPro podcast for 2018 featuring Samantha Gorman of indie XR/game/art studio Tender Claws (Virtual Virtual Reality, Tendar).
We’ll see you in 2019!
No Proscenium and Everything Immersive This Week is brought to you by the generous support of people just like you.
All we ask is $1 a month. Your donations keep this pirate ship from capsizing.
ON THE PODCAST THIS WEEK
Samantha Gorman is the co-founder — along with Danny Cannizzaro — of Tender Claws, a groundbreaking digital studio that mixes tech, art, and a wry sense of humor to create virtual and augmented reality works that push the narrative boundaries of the medium while maintaining a real heart. No small feat, that.
We talk with Samantha about what goes into making their work, focusing on their latest Tendar, and AR app currently available on the Google Play store.

From David & Lisa Spira of Room Escape Artist:
“Victor Milton van Doorn of Amsterdam’s famed Sherlocked put together a lovely video with his thoughts on the recent Enthusiast Choice Awards. His game The Vault won one of these awards. (It also won a 2017 Golden Lock-In for Room Escape Artist).”
“Club Drosselmeyer was a magnificent mirage. For a few hours, an idyllic night club filled with swing dancers, jazz musicians, histrionic characters, and challenging puzzles appeared out of the cold Boston air to host a distorted World War II rendition of The Nutcracker… and disappeared just as clock struck 11pm. There is no event in the puzzle or immersive theatre world that I eagerly anticipate more than this annual confluence of puzzles, swing dancing, music, and theatrics. It’s all of the entertainment that I love wrapped up for Christmas and tied with a bow.”
From Kent Bye, Voices of VR:
“When I hear of immersive documentary, I think of a 360 video. But that’s not what IDFA DocLab’s Caspar Sonnen thinks of. He’s guided by Grierson’s definition of “Documentary is the creative treatment of actuality.” DocLab showed me that the emerging immersive media landscape is about the creative treatment of the actuality of your embodied & emotional direct experiences mediated through immersive theater, social dynamics, and the interactive mechanics of VR, AR, and AI. Here’s an interview with Sonnen as well as my DocLab wrap-up:”
From Michael Anderson, ARGN.com:
“On Friday December 21st, members of the Agents of FIELD cracked Field Notes’ month-long ARG, chasing down a series of notebooks hidden across the globe to unlock a safe containing…well, you’ll just have to watch the final video to find out.”
Agents of F.I.E.L.D.Edit descriptionf1eldn0tes.com
“Setec Astronomy’s Alex Rosenthal recently gave a TED Talk on the MIT Mystery Hunt. In 2017, he embedded a series of puzzles in TEDEd videos as part of the Hunt. Setec is running the 2019 Hunt again, and there’s a puzzle hidden in the video.”
