‘A Horse by the Tail in the Night’ by Submersive Productions

Immersive is ringing a bell

It’s another jam-packed week in Immersive-Land! Lots of VR news coming out of GDC as well as what titles will be available on Oculus Quest, as well as the announcement of the Oculus Rift S, an incremental update to the original Rift. The Guardian asked if actors are needed to make theatre; Artnet News asked how experiential exhibits affect the future of museums; and Fast Company asked a bunch of leading tech companies about the future of augmented reality.

Meanwhile, at NoPro, we reviewed a remote ARG about a kidnapping victim and tried our hand at a hyper-reality horror experience mixing VR and immersive theatre, as well as uploading the start of our SXSW videos, and interviewing the creators behind two very different one-on-one experiences.

Plus: a trip down to Baltimore to interview the fine folks behind Submersive Productions.

All that and more, below.

ON THE PODCAST THIS WEEK

Managing Editor Kathryn Yu goes on the road to Baltimore for a conversation with four of the folks at Submersive Productions: co-artistic directors Glenn Ricci and Ursula Marcum, as well as artistic associates Susan Stroupe and Lisi Stoessel.

Join us as we dig into topics like their devising process, making open world shows, the care and feeding of the audience, telling history “at a slant,” getting the audience to feel complicit during a piece, focusing on diversity and inclusion while making immersive work, and making their productions more accessible.

We discuss their past shows such as The Mesmeric Revelations of Edgar Allan Poe; H.T. Darling’s Incredible Musaeum Presents: The Treasures of New Galapagos, Astonishing Acquisitions from the Perisphere; their episodic series The Institute of Visionary History which included an eight-hour durational performance called A Horse By the Tail in the Night; plus their upcoming movement-based large-scale participatory piece MASS/RABBLEwhich is coming April 3–14 to the Baltimore War Memorial.
