Press Release Follows
ULO’s Cyber Spirits, an eerily hilarious experiential journey, will be uniquely positioned to deliver belly-up laughter and a horrific but playful scare. An ULO original, Cyber Spirits was Created by Daisy Studio, Directed by kyttenjanae, Written by Dave Kornfeld previously at The Onion, and Curated by NextArt.
This brief but powerful eight-part artistic maze explores the presence of spirit in our digital devices. Visually, the experience leverages dream logic and surrealism, like a retrospective from an alternate universe. The phantasmic journey is pushed further with memorable punch lines and humor crafted by Dave Kornfeld who spent 10 years at The Onion. The unique outcome of this experience stems from the artists’ polychromatic, eye-popping visuals, satirical narrative and technical wizardry. They will leverage a combination of CRT monitors, video art, projection, custom physical installations, Augmented Reality, and speech synthesis to create a mind-bending experience for guests. ULO’s Cyber Spirits is meant to offer a new type of artistic journey that will leave visitors with ULO’s signature lightning bolt feeling — in this case a combination of curiosity, strangeness, and comedic joy.
Cyber Spirits, like all of ULO’s seasonal runs, will be offered as convenient 15 minute drop-ins that disappear as quickly as they arrive一leaving people wanting more. Tickets are $13 per person, and include evening and weekend hours, live from 10/4 till 11/3. Tickets can be purchased at https://www.ulo.world and at the door while supplies last.
WHO: ULO (UNIDENTIFIED LANDED OBJECT) was founded by Dani Van de Sande and is a female-led team of visionaries previously at Snapchat’s Augmented Reality Lens Studio Team, Brud, the company behind Instagram robot influencer Lil Miquela; and more. The startup teamed up with pioneers of Los Angeles’ tech and art movement, ROW DTLA, and select local artists to bring debut experiences to life. ULO’s experiences exist as portals integrated into the fabric of ordinary life — placed in high foot traffic environments, they offer a new type of artistic immersive experience available for spontaneous discovery.
Dani Van de Sande, Founder/CEO of ULO, was inspired to create ULO to enable and showcase the work of artists experimenting with new technologies and immersive formats, to wider audiences. Dani’s mission was to create experiences that had a deeper meaning beyond just being shareable, or VR novelty一that are easy to consume and have a transformative, visceral effect. Before launching ULO, Dani worked at Snap Inc. on their Augmented Reality projects. She is a first generation American born-and-raised in Los Angeles to a family of filmmakers and artists.
Amanda Levensohn, Digital Content Lead of ULO, most recently produced content for the world’s first CGI influencer, Miquela Sousa (aka Lil Miquela), an Instagram phenomenon with 1.6m followers (in addition to @bermudaisbae, @blawko22 and @club404notfound) from the secretive L.A. startup, Brud.
kyttenjanae, Creator/Director of Cyber Spirits, is an LA-based artist and director who sits at the cross-section of experimental animation, technology, and interactivity. She began her practice using Tumblr as a platform for her artwork while still in school, quickly garnering a sizable following after graduating that pushed her to leave her production house job in order to focus on art making full time. Over time Kyt became known for her large digital audience, work for Adult Swim, Animal Collective, Viceland and more.
Philip Rugo, Creator/Director of Cyber Spirits, is an LA-based media artist and co-collaborator with kyttenjanae on Daisy Studio.
Daisy Studio, creative studio behind Cyber Spirits, is the brainchild of Kytten Janae and Philip Rugo. Daisy was born out of a shared love of vintage technology, multimedia artwork, and world-building. Daisy frequently creates original work and collaborations for Adult Swim and live music spaces.
Dave Kornfeld, writer of Cyber Spirits, is a former writer and editor for The Onion, and was a staff writer on the immersive comedy project Thud. He’s been sitting on a very dumb Thanksgiving tweet since 2016. Could this be the year?
Bess Wyrick, Senior Director of Brand Management at ROW DTLA, a unique retail and cultural hub attracting creatives, innovators, and artists at the edge of Los Angeles’ expanding Arts District. Wyrick and the team at ROW have been first to support new experiential endeavors, artists and entrepreneurs paving the future of art and technology.
