In Another Room remains one of the strongest debuts we’ve ever seen here at NoPro, when creators Austin & Aaron Keeling and Natalie Jones (E3W Productions) turned their own apartment into the setting of an exquisitely executed piece of immersive theatre.

Now the team revisits the haunted house concept at an all new location, with all new ghosts. (This also means they get to sleep in their own beds.) The show opens on October 19th, making it a Spooky Season surprise. We caught up with them via the supernatural force that is email.

No Proscenium (NP): New House. New Ghosts. What’s the big difference for those who’ve seen the original, and will new audiences need to know anything going in?

E3W Productions (E3W): After the run of In Another Room last fall, we realized that we had just barely scratched the surface of what stories we wanted to explore within the world of the supernatural. This year we’re opening the doors to a new house and telling completely new ghost stories.

Audiences don’t need to know anything going in — this is a stand alone show with entirely original content. Fans of the original In Another Room will be familiar with the overall tone, themes, and structure, but these are new ghosts, after all, and there are many surprises in this house’s new rooms.

NP: What made you want to return to the In Another Room universe?

E3W: We love houses — love that each one has its own history, its own share of tragedy and misfortunes that have occurred within its rooms — and we had the greatest time conjuring up ghost stories for the house that our first show took place in last fall. When a new house fell into our laps it was immediately clear what we had to do with it — new ghosts, new ghost stories, another foray into the supernatural in yet another haunted house.

We love the idea of the haunted house as a vessel for stories of love and despair, regret and yearning. It is our hope to continue finding homes like this and tapping into their unique and ghostly stories to create distinctly different but thematically familiar experiences within the In Another Room universe, year after year.

NP: What have you learned about making immersive work since that first production that you’re incorporating into this new version?

E3W: We’ve learned a lot of lessons over the past year or so, including the lesson that even when the world throws you insane curveballs (i.e. a large corporation stealing our venue out from under us a week into shows for Bitter at the End), there’s always a way to make things work out! We’ve also been on a journey of solidifying what type of content we like, what type of immersion we like, what works for us and where our strengths are and what type of shows we want to make… So while this is a brand new show, it’s not an extreme departure for us. We are sticking close to what we like and do best and presenting it from a different angle, and we’re excited for guests to step back into our world and see what we’ve conjured up.

In Another Room runs October 19 — November 4 in an undisclosed location in Culver City. Tickets go on sale on Friday and will be $65.
