What happens when The Tempest, often known for extravagant special effects, a kindly father-figure with a wand, and tropical greenery is put on by a feminist director and an experimental immersive theatre company in a corrugated steel underground performance club?

Directed by the extraordinary Mary McDonald-Lewis, and featuring Chris Porter as Prospero with an exceptional cast of magicians, misfits, and brave monsters, Speculative Drama’s Tempest explores the deeper manipulations that Prospero works upon those in his care and under his thumb.

Taking cues from our environment in residence at The Steep and Thorny Way to Heaven, Speculative Drama brings a haunting, lush, and sometimes whimsical island to life. Inspired by the ideas of colonialism and control, how we find ourselves amidst loss and being lost, and the visual imagery of container ship flotillas and post-industrial landscapes reclaimed by nature, we invite the audience directly into the action in this immersive production uncovering the misunderstandings, machinations, and magic of this legendary play.
