The Isle of Sugar is a one-of-a-kind roleplaying game/theatre experience that explores the history and human cost of the Cuban Revolution.
Show creator Alejandro Tey interviewed dozens of Cuban refugees (many of whom emigrated as unaccompanied children), former political prisoners, and exiles, including his own grandparents. These direct accounts create the turbulent, urgent world of The Isle of Sugar. During this innovative storytelling event, you could find yourself marching alongside Fidel Castro’s rebel youth, or working in clandestine counter-revolutionary operations, trying to survive and protect your family and loved ones while everything around you turns upside down.
In The Isle of Sugar, your choices incite a cascade of consequences that affect the plot and your fellow theatre-goers. But how much control do you actually have? What are you willing to stand for and who will you stand by when the dice fall?
Originally developed through a fellowship with Projecting All Voices at Arizona State University’s Herberger Institute in 2017/2018 and presented now in partnership with Sojourn Theatre, this production will continue the development of a pioneering form of participatory theatre. This work-in-progress follows last year’s staged reading at the Frontier and will change and grow each week based on audience feedback.

Content Advisories: The story may include details of political imprisonment/the violence that some Cubans experienced during the revolution. However, there is a green/yellow/red system in place for audience members to make their comfort level known, and the game masters will adjust accordingly.
The space is accessible from the street, and there is no mobility required during the evening.
