My goodness. What a week. What’s been going on? Managing Editor of NoPro Kathryn Yu got a peek at Third Rail Projects’ latest NYC show, Behind the City. We also interviewed the folks over at The Experiences about their latest project, Neil Patrick Harris’ immersive birthday surprise. We’ve also got a conversation with Jon Braver about what he’s got in store for this fall’s Delusion in Los Angeles. We spoke to the folks behind the Dungeons and Dragons ARG, No Stone Unturned on the NoPro podcast. And NoPro founder and publisher Noah Nelson is currently in China (!) speaking on a panel at the Sandbox Immersive Festival.
What else? A bunch of great immersive projects won Cannes Lions, including the #SXSWestworld experience by HBO/Giant Spoon/Mycotoo, The VOID/ILMxLab’s Secrets of the Empire, and Here Be Dragons’ Dispatch. And our friend Jesse Damiani published an amazing essay about the effects VR and AR will have on UX design. Also, the folks at Room Escape Artist reviewed a Snickers-themed escape room. You know. The candy bar.
Plus, our friends over at the Future of Storytelling Festival opened up their application for the 2018 FoST Prize while the folks over IndieCade also extended their deadline to apply as well. Time to get cracking!
ON THE PODCAST THIS WEEK
At the heart of many an immersonaut’s journey is #SOMEDND, the “DND” being Dungeons & Dragons, and as it just so happens that hashtag stood for a recent livestream extravaganza called the Stream of Many Eyes.
Now, why is NoPro talking about live-streaming D&D?
Well for one, the lead up to the stream was a multiverse hopping alternate reality game (#NoStoneUnturned) that called upon the powers of transmedia producer Emmett Furey and puzzle designer Elisa Teague, who join us on this week’s episode to talk about the ARG, mixing tabletop gaming with escape room-like puzzles, and the renaissance in roleplaying games.
Look: we always knew it was going to come down to Dungeons & Dragons. It’s almost a surprise it took this long to get here.
