Every two years Chalk Repertory Theatre, the Los Angeles based site-adaptive theatre company, puts together a cycle of short plays. The selection rotates each week for three weekends, tapping into the well of writers and directors in Chalk’s orbit.

The talent pool is deep and wide. Since the setting for the festival is St. John’s Cathedral in the heart of LA during an election year that pool has been tasked with creating new work on the theme of religion and politics.

This weekend’s selections are beyond solid, with the company showing the full range of their dramatic powers in five pieces that for the most part go by in a, well, a flash. I was particularly fond of the the David Myers written, Larissa Kokernot directed Ka-Pew and Separation by writer Speed Weed and director Peter Wylie. The former choked me up and the later had me rolling.

If you want to see what site-responsive work can be, this weekend’s run is a clinic in the art.

There’s one more chance to catch this week’s line-up tonight, come Thursday the next squad is up. Given the level that the company is working at, you’re in good hands.

Chalk Rep’s Flash Festival takes place St. Johns Cathedral, 514 W. Adams Blvd, Los Angeles. Thurs-Sat thru Oct. 22nd. Tickets are $20.
