Co-creator Amy Rubenstein chats all things 1960s cocktail party and more
Windy City Playhouse’s Southern Gothic, the ambitious immersive play set during a birthday party at home in 1961, has been running strong in Chicago since its opening this past February. The show has been so successful that it’s been extended numerous times, and is about to move to a new permanent location in the South Loop.
We chatted with Windy City Playhouse’s Artistic Director Amy Rubenstein about the making of Southern Gothic, what it’s like building an entire home inside of a theater, and the audience response to the show.
This interview has been lightly edited for clarity.

Southern Gothic will play at its current location through December 9 and then reopen in its new home on January 2, 2019. Tickets are $65–100 and are on sale now.
