Glimpse a future where human contact is regulated, where the act of physical contact itself is rebellion. This is the world of Touch.

Incarnation is a solo ‘sensorial journey’ set in the world of the upcoming longer, narrative-driven piece.

Imagine a not too distant future where all physical human touch is controlled and regulated by the government. It is a system built upon fear and extremism. Couples must schedule ‘intimacy sessions’ before physical contact is made. All physical human contact unapproved by the Party, as registered by ‘skindicators,’ — a device that changes your skin’s color at the point of contact — is a capital offense. Citizens are provided ‘social credit scores’ that dictate their ability to work, buy property, even whether or not they are allowed to have children. Capital punishment is based on the senses. Commit a crime strong enough, any sense — taste, smell, sight, hearing, touch — could be in jeopardy of being removed. Permanently.

Such is the world that serves as the backdrop for a pair of immersive experiences opening soon in Los Angeles. TOUCH: INCARNATION is an approximately 20 minute ‘sensorial journey’ designed for audiences of one, while TOUCH, which opens a month later, is a longer, more story-driven immersive experience, though still limited to only 10 audience members per performance. Set in the same thematic universe, TOUCH and TOUCH: INCARNATION are designed to be stand-alone events, so attendees will be provided with a unique experience whether they attend only one show or they attend both.

‘The idea for this experience was inspired by many of the issues currently facing our species today,’ says Trailblazer Productions’ Ben Cox, the director and producer for both events. ‘It’s an exploration of where we are as humans in 2019, where we’ve come from and where, for better or worse, we’re headed. I love immersive works and am thrilled to see the variety of productions that have been popping up over the past few years. There is something very immediate and tactile about an immersive experience and it felt like the perfect and frankly, necessary, way to tell this story. People crave experiences that are tangible and sensorial and in an age where technology has created a side-effect of disconnection, experiencing something that brings back focus to all of our senses can have a very powerful effect.’

With the massive popularity of such shows as Black Mirror and The Handmaid’s Tale, people’s awareness of many of the issues facing our society today seems to be as strong as ever. TOUCH fits right into that dystopian landscape. ‘Part of what makes those shows so resonant is that they are not far removed from reality. It’s a cautionary tale of where we could end up if we aren’t aware and we don’t take a stand against manipulation,’ says Cox. In the TOUCH world, a mysterious group known as the Body Electric dares to challenge such a system, and in doing so, seeks to rediscover and embrace the very essence of humanity and connection.

‘Many of us have gone to a production and talked about how cool it looked or how visually unique it was and that’s great! But what if we created a show that forced audiences to look inside themselves? Let’s create a show that you don’t just watch, but something you see, hear, smell, taste, and touch.’ In the case of TOUCH: INCARNATION for example, Cox says that participants will spend about 75% of the show blindfolded. ‘It forces you to experience things in a way you don’t necessarily focus on most of the time. With both shows, I want people to walk out not just being entertained for the evening, but actually asking questions of themselves and their choices. I want to make something that inspires audiences to realize that we as humans have power and choice and should make decisions that allow us to create lives that are actually fulfilling and beneficial to us.’

TOUCH and TOUCH: INCARNATION are a pair of multi-sensory immersive experiences that will take audiences on a journey of exploration and remind them what it really means to be human.
