The Great Brown Bear is a surrealist adaptation of the classic Nordic folktale ‘East o’ the Sun, West o’ the Moon’. The show uses the folktale as a lens to frame the journey of two real-world lovers as they navigate what it means to relate to each other in a truthful way.

Inspired by the author’s own parents’ love story, the show will be an intimate experience for both audience and actor as they work together to retell a fable that, according to the show’s opening narrator, “belongs to all of us”.

Sit on the floor (if you’re so inclined) among the actors as they weave a succinct, 80 minute tale with you and among you, using poetry, dance, and conventional acting narrative. Expect elements of traditional Scandinavian folk music and lore woven with a sprinkle of 80’s punk, a firm grapple with themes of religion and gender roles, and a fairytale through-line that won’t always provide the comforting pixie dust we expect.

Members of the audience may be asked to hand an actor something, touch an actor’s hand, dance, etc. with consent.
