Science: it’s not just a boy’s club anymore. And it never was. Radical theater collective Applied Mechanics has partnered with Philadelphia Young Playwrights (PYP) to create STEM FEMMES, an immersive play about women who have made amazing contributions to scientific fields. STEM FEMMES, in collaboration with PYP students ages 14–18, will be performed with Applied Mechanics in December 2019.

STEM FEMMES will be performed by a mix of professional actors and PYP student playwrights/performers, for an audience that includes students of PYP-affiliated high schools as well as the general public. STEM FEMMES will give the audience an opportunity to engage with stories of the unsung she-roes of science throughout history. The audience will be encouraged to think of the performance itself as a visit to a Scientific laboratory. They will gain access to the inner workings of a plethora of scientific subdisciplines, from the natural to the planetary, the biological to the technological. This theatrical event showcases not only these womens’ lives, but their discoveries, innovations, and achievements. STEM FEMMES will engage the audience in a celebration of science as a field inclusive of all gender identities.
