What started out as a pop-up at the Hollywood Fringe Festival’s opening night party has morphed into something other.

Combining techniques from transmedia experiences with immersive theatre events, the unfolding narrative tells the story of a conflict between The Society — a mystery cult — and its resistance movement “The Boanthropic.”

The narrative has unfolded on Instagram accounts, in Reddit forums, blogs, Slack channels, and in a series of pop-up events. What’s innovative here is that the pop-ups seem to “unlock” those experiences, which can then be visited by those who aren’t in the vanguard of the ongoing “game.” For those who are turned off by the FOMO aspect of alternate reality games, this is a step forward for the genre.

While we could hot-link directly to the menu of events, the creators have asked us to preserve some of the mystery in order to get you into the spirit of things.
