An all-new, site-responsive work from L.A. Contemporary Dance Company marks the first public performance at Stomping Ground L.A..
Press Release Follows
Departing from the proscenium stage, L.A. Contemporary Dance Company (LACDC) brings to life an immersive experience from October 8–13, 2019. The new world-premier work will breathe and morph around audiences as the piece progresses. “Terra is a celebration of new life, community, and a sense of belonging,” says Genevieve Carson, LACDC Artistic Director. An empty warehouse space in East L.A. will come alive with new imagery and interactive surprises from a collaboration between a creative team of visual, textile, and theatrical artists with LACDC company members drawing inspiration from elements of the natural world.
Audiences are encouraged to maximize their time in the immersive work to experience shifts in perspective, a fully encompassing sonic environment featuring live composition and performance by Robert Amjärv, visually captivating landscapes facilitated by integrated scenic designer Carlo Maghirang, video and projection design by Hsuan-Kuang Hsieh, textile and costume design by Kelsey Vidic, lighting design by Katelan Braymer, and movement design by Genevieve Carson and Drea Sobke.
Due to a unique partnership, Terra will be the first performance series to take place at Stomping Ground L.A., a community arts space for the practice and performance of movement arts, and a safe and welcoming home for professional artists and the public to gather and create. Stomping Ground L.A. will have its first public open house event in early December 2019, with an official opening in early 2020. LACDC’s immersive work will be a rare opportunity to get an up-close peek into the new arts space.
Terra features immersive set design by Carlo Maghirang, video design by Hsuan-Kuang Hsieh, costume design by Kelsey Vidic, live composition by Robert Amjärv, lighting design by Katelan Braymer, choreography by Genevieve Carson and Drea Sobke, and performances by LACDC dancers Christian Beasley, Hyosun Choi, Kate Coleman, Lenin Fernandez, Nicole Hagen, Angel Tyson, JM Rodriguez, Ryan Ruiz, Tiffany Sweat, and guest artist Carissa Songhorian.
The final evening of the six show run on Sunday, October 13, 2019 will include the immersive performance, a toast with the company, an immersive art project to commemorate Stomping Ground L.A., and a celebration hosted by LACDC’s board of directors and company members with hors d’oeuvres and free flowing beverages.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Genevieve Carson (choreographer/director) is the artistic director of LA Contemporary Dance Company. Genevieve’s work is focused on the human condition. She approaches her dancers as unique individuals, aiming to expose the beautiful vulnerabilities and idiosyncrasies that each performer possesses. Genevieve’s work has spanned across North America, the Philippines, Argentina, Sweden, and New Zealand. She has been commissioned and presented by the US Embassies of Buenos Aires and Auckland, ODC Theater, UC Santa Barbara, Musco Center for the Arts, Luckman Arts Complex, Laguna Dance Festival, Ford Theaters and others. Commercial choreography credits include Foster the People, Superbowl XLIX, Adult Swim, and Comedy Central. Additional credits include the Emmys, Samsung, CottonOn, TEDx, and music videos for Blood Orange, Active Child, and Justin Bieber. Genevieve has been a guest artist at Cal Arts, Cal State Long Beach, University of Auckland, University of the Philippines, and more. She is currently on faculty at AMDA. Genevieve graduated cum laude with a BFA in Dance Performance from Chapman University.
Drea Sobke (choreographer/director) is a Mexican-American movement artist from San Diego, California whose work closely explores the relationship between the human body and pop, fine art, landscapes, architecture and design. She has performed and/or collaborated closely with Genevieve Carson and the following choreographers via LACDC: Micaela Taylor, Stephanie Zaletel, Roya Carreras, Rebecca Lemme, Laurel Jenkins Tentindo, Holly Rothschild, Nathan Makolandra, Kevin Williamson, Kate Hutter, David Bridel, and Adam Parson. Drea has also performed as a company member or guest artist with Helios Dance Theater, Rosanna Gamson/WorldWide, Backausdance, Malashock Dance, Sarah Elgart | Elegant Elbow, San Diego Dance Theater, Heidi Duckler Dance, String Theory Harp, visual artist James Mountford and her partner Robert Amjärv. Drea’s choreography has been presented by NOH Wave Gallery, American College Dance Festival, The Choreography Festival (formerly Dance Under The Stars), and SOLA Dance Festival. Drea holds a BFA in Dance Performance from Chapman University and is a 2 time recipient of the Lester Horton Award for Outstanding Achievement in Performance by a Female.
Robert Amjärv (composer) is a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, producer, composer and filmmaker. Rob’s musical pursuit began early on, primarily engaging himself in the self-taught route. At age 13, he recorded his first album, and shortly after graduating High School at 14, he attended the Academy of Entertainment Technology in Los Angeles — studying sound and video production. From 2003 until 2006, he lived in Lake Arrowhead California, and completed three albums with his music project ‘Pentamental.’ A single track off the 5.1 surround music album, ‘Harm and Harmony’ earned a nomination for a Horizon/best-newcomer award for the 4th Annual Surround Music Awards in 2005. Shortly after moving back to Los Angeles in 2007, Rob joined the prestigious music and dance ensemble String Theory initially as a sitar and theremin player, but eventually as collaborator. In 2011, he joined the teams of HUMA-HUMA and TEST PATTERN as a composer, producer and engineer. Rob continues to involve himself with several live and recording projects in LA and globally.
Carlo Maghirang (set designer) is a freelance visual artist/designer in the Los Angeles area. With a diverse background in the fine arts, he is proficient in design, sculpture, scenic painting, puppetry, graphic art, collage/assemblage, and digital animation, specializing in creating spaces in motion (cos(myth)os, The Glass Mountain). Recent projects include the national tour of Fore!, written by Aleshea Harris and directed by Arnaud Meunier, as well as scenic designer for Indonesian dance and performance artist Didik Nini Thowok. Others include Heidi Duckler Dance Theater’s ‘The Enormous Wound,’ and the West Coast premier of Erin Courtney’s ‘A Map of Virtue’ at Barker Room Rep. Works outside of theater involve production design for The Black Eyed Peas’ upcoming music video for WINGS, musical artist Speck City, and various collaborations with event design companies such as Entertainment Design Corporation, Vizier Productions, and Global Entertainment Services. He has also served as Associate Scenic Designer to Chris Barreca for David Byrne’s Joan of Arc: Into the Fire (Public Theater, NY), Lynn Nottage’s Sweat (Mark Taper Forum), and Adrienne Kennedy’s ‘He Brought Her Heart Back in a Box’ (TFANA, NY).
Hsuan-Kuang Hsieh (video designer) is a professional video projection designer who has been working closely with directors, filmmakers and choreographers to create immersive live performance in the past 10 years. She believes projection should exist as moving images that constantly evolve with actions on stage. More than indicating space and time or building textural atmosphere, her video is an active message supporting the storyline that echoes with characters. Various mediums are incorporated into her designs, including: cinematic imagery, analogue projection, shadow puppetry, live-feed operation and drawing, and interactive technology. Her work has been shown in YBCA, RedCat, The FORD, Kirk, Douglas Theater, LATC, 3LD Art and Technology, Ostrava Center for New Music and more.
Kelsey Vidic (costume designer) was born in Florida. Her opera-singing grandmother fueled a childhood curiosity. As her interests matured she interned with Brevard Music Center, STAGES St. Louis, Gomez-Gracia in London and the Santa Fe Opera for two seasons. After honing her costume construction skills, she desired a life of design. She received an MFA in Costume Design at the University of Texas at Austin. Narrowing her degree expanded her path of artistry. Working with bodies, textiles and space opened doors to work with companies such as the Intel Corporation, Opera på Skåret in Kopparberg, Sweden, American Players Theatre and with the Rude Mechanicals at the Guthrie Theater, all under varying job titles. Vidic currently works as the Costume Designer and Shop Manager for the Dance Department at California State University, Long Beach. Most recently, her MFA Thesis project, Adrift, was chosen to be displayed as a part of USITT’s Emerging Artist Exhibit in the Prague Quadrenniel, 2019. She is open to all possibilities as a designer, working to merge her spatial design, costume design and construction, and newly found weaving practice in performative spaces. She will continue to listen with her eyes and always prefers the present moment. Website: kelseyvidic.com
